What Styles Of Dance Are Taught At Clifton Academy?

Ballet - Ballet is a classical form of dancing with formalised, technical steps and gestures which combine with the music, costumes and scenery to create expression and tell a story on stage. Ballet is characterised by grace and precision.
Tap - Tap dancing involves the rhythm of the music being echoed by the clicking taps on the heels and toes of the dancer’s shoes.
Modern - Modern dancing is a rhythmical style of dancing often seen on stage in musical productions.
Jazz - Jazz is a dance genre characterised by improvisation and the use of up to date pop music.
Street Jazz - Street Jazz is a mix of intricate footwork, spins and acrobatic floor moves in response to the varying rhythms of street and hip hop music.

Zumba - Zumba is our new class; which combines dance and aerobics to help you keep fit whilst having fun.

Ballroom Dancing - Ballroom dancing refers to social dances, such as the Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep and Waltz, in which couples follow a conventional pattern of steps   as they travel around the room.

Latin Dancing - Latin dancing, such as the Cha Cha Cha and Rumba, are characterised by the style of the Latin music, highly emphasised hip actions and flamboyant arm lines.

Which Dance Classes are Available for Children at Clifton Academy?

Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Street Jazz, Ballroom and Latin Dance classes are taught at Clifton Academy.
Both group dance lessons and private dance tuition is available at Clifton Academy in St. Anne’s. Boys regularly attend our dancing lessons by the way!

What Dance Classes Are Available For Adults At Clifton Academy?

Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Street Jazz and Zumba classes are taught at Clifton Academy.
Both group dance lessons and private dance tuition is available at Clifton Academy in St. Anne’s. Private wedding dance lessons are also available.

Are There Any Dance Classes For Boys At Clifton Academy?

Yes! All of the lessons on the timetable are suitable for both girls and boys alike.

Does Clifton Academy Hold Nursery Dance Classes?

Yes – Nursery Dance Classes for youngsters aged 2-3 explore movement to music to prepare children for more formal dance classes in specific dance genres.

Are Any Other Groups Held At Clifton Academy?

Gymnastics and Stretch & Flex are also available at Clifton Academy.
Stretch & Flex is a conditioning class to work on flexibility and strength to support improvement in performance in all dance disciplines for children at Grade 4 and upwards and also adults.

What Do Acting Lessons / Drama Workshops At Clifton Academy Cover?

Pupils learning to act at Clifton Academy develop their drama skills through role play, miming and body language activities, drama games, use of props, character development work, story telling and improvisation.

What Types Of Music Lessons Are On Offer At Clifton Academy?

Individual private music tuition (Piano, Guitar, Drum and Singing) is taught at Clifton Academy to both children and adults.
Our Children’s Pop Choir group rehearses weekly.

Are Classes At Clifton Academy Mixed Age?

Dance classes at Clifton Academy are usually mixed age, with pupils grouped according to grade rather than their age. Children take dance exams in order to move up to higher level dance classes. Drama workshops / acting lessons in Lytham St. Anne’s at Clifton Academy are grouped according to age and children can begin drama classes at the age of five. Lytham St. Anne’s music tuition and singing lessons at Clifton Academy are individual private lessons, with the exception of the Children’s Pop Choir. Music classes are open to both children and adults.

How Long Do Classes At Clifton Academy Last?

Dancing lessons at Clifton Academy last between thirty and forty five minutes, depending on the grade of the class and the style of dance being taught. Private music lessons last thirty minutes, drama and gymnastic classes one hour and the Musical Theatre classes one and a half hours.

Are There Any Wider Benefits From Performing Arts Tuition?

Dancing improves health and fitness, flexibility, co-ordination, strength, rhythm and posture. All the performing arts help pupils to develop life skills, including confidence, self esteem, commitment, discipline and social skills. What Facilities Does Clifton Academy Offer?

Clifton Academy in St. Anne’s boasts three purpose built, state of the art dance studios, fully equipped with floor to ceiling mirrors, Harlequin sprung dance floors, ballet barres and pianos, along with a wide selection of drama resources. Four music rooms, all with pianos and a Drum Room with a drum kit are available for individual music tuition (guitar lessons, piano lessons and drumming lessons) and singing lessons. Backing tracks and sheet music are provided for singing classes. Changing rooms and a spacious waiting area are accessible to dance and drama students and parents.

What Do Parent’s Do During Performing Arts Classes?

So as not to distract children during their performing arts lessons, parents can relax and watch TV or enjoy a chat with other parents. There’s even an outdoor seating area for you to soak up the summer sun! You’ll have many opportunities to watch your child perform, as our boys and girls regularly show off their dance skills, drama talents and musical abilities at our annual school show.

What Qualifications Can Be Achieved At Clifton Academy?

For students who wish to gain qualifications, entry for the following exams can be arranged.

Dance - Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) exams in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Jazz can be studied for at Clifton Academy. ISTD exams are internationally recognised and ISTD is the exam board most frequently used by the London theatre schools. United Kingdom Alliance Of Professional Teachers Of Dancing (UKA) exams are taken in Ballroom and Latin. Children will be eager to display the official certificates they are awarded each time they pass an exam. We are proud to have maintained a 100% success rate in dance exams since Clifton Academy Dance School in St. Anne’s opened.
Drama - LAMDA (The London Academy Of Music & Dramatic Art) graded exams in acting performance can be taken at Clifton Academy.
Music - Clifton Academy’s music teachers will arrange exams on an individual basis.

Do Students At Clifton Academy Have The Opportunity To Perform & Compete?

For Clifton Academy pupils who wish to, there are opportunities to compete in dance, drama and music competitions at both local and national level, on an individual and group performance basis. Pupils from Clifton Academy feature in the annual Christmas pantomime at Lowther Pavilion and students who attend our Musical Theatre class perform locally in our annual musical. All dance, drama and music students have the fantastic opportunity to perform in our annual full scale music production, held at the world famous Blackpool Opera House!

Do Students at Clifton Academy Require Specialist Uniform & Dance Shoes?

Clifton Academy’s uniform is available to purchase form the Academy. Girls wear black sparkly leotards with black stirrup tights underneath and boys wear black unitards with black jazz pants over the top.  Adults learning to dance wear their own suitable clothing. Ballet and Tap shoes can also be bought from the Academy but are not essential for initial classes.
